IRP x Shelter Box UK

One Shelter One Family at a time

The torrential floods of 2025 have left a trail of devastation across Pakistan, especially in provinces like Punjab and KP. In Punjab, districts like Muzaffargarh, Multan, and Rajanpur are submerged under relentless waters, displacing thousands and destroying homes, crops, and livelihoods. Similarly, in KP, the mountainous region of Buner, Shangla, and Swat faced unprecedented landslides and flash floods, isolating communities and exacerbating food and shelter shortages. Over 1.5 million people were affected, with families left exposed to harsh weather, disease, and uncertainty.

In response, Islamic Relief Pakistan launched a swift and comprehensive emergency operation, mobilising teams to deliver lifesaving aid within days of the disaster. Drawing on decades of experience in humanitarian crises, IRP provided immediate food parcels, clean water, and medical support to over 50,000 individuals. Their efforts focused on the most vulnerable – women, children, and the elderly, ensuring equitable distribution through community-led assessments. This rapid intervention prevented further loss of life and laid the groundwork for long-term recovery.

A cornerstone of this response has been the distribution of 1000 shelter boxes, generously supported by ShelterBox UK. These emergency shelters represent a beacon of stability for flood survivors, transforming open-air desperation into secure havens. In KP, 500 boxes were strategically allocated: 250 to Buner, 150 to Shangla, and 100 to Swat, supporting families. In Punjab, the remaining 500 reached critical hotspots: 200 in Muzaffargarh, 200 in Multan, 30 in Rajanpur, and 70 in Bahawalpur. This targeted rollout ensured aid reached the hardest hit zones, with distribution conducted with local authorities to prioritise those in need.

Each Shelter box is a comprehensive kit designed for rapid deployment and lasting utility. Beyond the shelter itself, families received essential household items that rebuild daily life: kitchen sets for cooking meals, solar lights to illuminate nights without electricity, blankets and mattresses for warmth and rest, mosquito nets to ward off diseases, tarpaulin sheets for temporary roofing, and hygiene kits to maintain health amid contaminated water. These provisions have had a profound impact, for instance, in Jalalpur 200 families now cook under a safe roof, fostering a sense of normalcy and community resilience.

At the heart of each box is the shelter – a durable, weather-resilient tent engineered for Pakistan’s diverse climate, able to accommodate around 8 – 10 people, providing ample space for families to gather, sleep, and heal. Thoughtfully designed with internal partitions for privacy and mesh ventilation panels for airflow. Groundsheets and repair kits make it adaptable to uneven terrain, and its modular frame assembles in under an hour with minimal tools. For people affected by floods, where something as basic as a roof above their heads has become a luxury they cannot afford right now, these shelters bring back a shred of normalcy, security, and safety to them.

With the help of our generous donors, IRP is now planning to transition from Relief to Rehabilitation, with plans to rebuild shelters for the people who have lost their houses to the flash floods. As Pakistan rebuilds, partners like Shelter Box UK exemplify how collective compassion can restore entire communities, one shelter, one family at a time.
