Buner hardest-hit as death toll surpasses 340

Torrential rains and cloudbursts have triggered catastrophic flash floods across northern Pakistan, claiming over 340 lives in recent days. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), nine districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Buner, Shangla, Swat, Mansehra, Bajaur, and Battagram — have been declared disaster-hit.

Human Impact

  • Buner District suffered the heaviest losses, with more than 200 deaths in 48 hours, 120 injured, and dozens still missing.
  • Other districts reported heavy casualties: Shangla (36), Mansehra (23), Swat (22), Bajaur (21), Battagram (15), Lower Dir (5), and Abbottabad (1 child).
  • Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir also reported further deaths and widespread destruction.
  • Entire villages are in mourning, with survivors struggling to recover loved ones trapped under debris.

Infrastructure Damage

  • Homes: 11 completely destroyed, 63 partially damaged.
  • Education: Schools in Swat and Shangla severely impacted.
  • Power supply: Floodwaters submerged the 132KV Swat grid station, disrupting electricity to 41 feeders.
  • Access: Roads, bridges, and communication towers washed away, leaving rescue teams unable to reach many remote areas.

Warnings & Advisory

 

The Pakistan Meteorological Department warns of continued heavy rainfall until 21 August, with fresh monsoon spells expected in Balochistan from 18–22 August.
The Flood Forecasting Division has issued advisories for medium-to-high flood levels in River Kabul (Nowshera), River Indus (Kalabagh, Chashma), and their tributaries between 15–17 August 2025. The KP government has officially declared Buner, Bajaur, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, and Battagram as disaster-hit districts. Rescue 1122 has urged citizens to avoid floodwaters, drains, and bridges, and to immediately contact helplines in emergencies.
