What’s Bakin’?

“I was in eighth grade when I got married. I always wanted to have my business but life had other plans. Time went by, I became a mother and got busy with my children who are the love of my life.

Then came a turning point, Islamic Relief came to my village Orakzai, Kohat. They provided me with poultry. Using the eggs from the poultry, I began selling them. With the modest savings I had, I invested in bakeware and ventured into baking, facing initial struggles and many burnt cakes until I mastered the art.

Baking gave me the chance to make my dream a reality. My neighbour, my first customer asked for a theme cake. It was liberating and from there, my business flourished. Order after order, my home-based bakery became the talk of the town.

I discovered a hidden talent I never knew existed. I still cannot believe I can make cakes, pastries, and other bakery items. The help not only supported my household but also built back my confidence. I am the go-to baker in the village. I sometimes pinch myself to make sure that I am not dreaming.”
