Appeal for South Asia Earthquake launched
The earthquake, which measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, originated from Badakhshan, a remote area of northern Afghanistan, near the border with Tajikistan, and was 196km (120 miles) deep. It occurred at about 2.30pm local time.
Islamic Relief’s emergency panel held a meeting to discuss the earthquake. In-country teams have been mobilised to gather information on needs in the affected areas. Islamic Relief Worldwide has launched an appeal for the South Asia Earthquake. Our teams in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India have been mobilised and are assessing the situation in the affected areas. We are looking into the possibility of despatching Disaster Response Teams, and shall be distributing pre-positioned stocks.
IRW has provisionally allocated £50,000 GBP for immediate use. Due to IR experience in this region, and similar disasters, our Humanitarian Department expects the needs to be much greater than current reports are suggesting.
